Outstanding achievement award

November 15, 1999
By Susan Siegal

People recieves awardFour members of the CSUSB community have been awarded for outstanding achievement and dedication toward a safer working environment.
President Karnig was on hand at the Physical Plant's September "Burger Blowout" to share in the festivities and to personally congratulate the Safety Award winners. (Left to right: Roybal, Casillas, Garza, President Karnig, Jones.)

Richard Casillas, Jessie Garza, Simmie Jones, and Fred Roybal were recognized by California State Governor Gray Davis for administering emergency first aid to former groundsworker, Tom Churchill.

Jessie spotted Tom slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle. Enlisting the aid of her co-workers, Richard, Simmie, and Fred, Jessie was able to remove Tom from his vehicle and assess the situation. CPR was administered until the group was successful in reviving their co-worker. Paramedics then arrived and Tom was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, Tom later succumbed to the damage caused by the initial heart attack. Jessie's actions and those of her co-workers are commendable and indicative of their respect and dedication towards their fellow workers and the safety of the campus community.
