*****On
Tuesday morning, August 24, 1999 an unfortunate failure occurred.
It was the Biology building air handler fan shaft
that failed, causing a complete loss of cooling and ventilation
to the entire building adversely affecting occupants and critical
research.
It
couldn't have happened
at a worse time; the hottest day of the year and at a time of
minimal HAC dept staffing due to vacations.
Fortunately,
a new shaft was on hand, and all HACsperts on duty except for
the central plant operator, were diverted from other duties to
the task of repairing the air handler in order to restore cooling
and ventilation to the BI building.
Thanks
to the non-stop work and expertise of these technicians, a job
that was anticipated to take two days was whittled down to six
hours. The unit was back in service before 3pm that very day.
HAC
department apologizes to the campus community whom may have had
service postphoned on that day because of this emergency, and
to the BI building occupants themselves who had to endure one
of the hottest days without cooling.*******
